Rural women making progress; still a long way to go
CSW62 March 14th, 2018 Side Event
Rural women in their unique varied situations around the world are gaining in roles of leadership in society. Through community positions, women’s cooperatives, and economic advancement, they are finding more multigenerational empowerment. But, indeed, rural women are often isolated and face many obstacles in accessing public services, social protection, employment and markets, due to factors such as cultural norms, security issues and lack of identification documents.
Rural women constitute one-fourth of the world’s population. They are leaders, producers, entrepreneurs and service providers, and their contributions are vital to the well-being of families, communities and economies, and the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
