The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), held under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, concluded a comprehensive 10-day event that focused on the theme of “Accelerating the recovery from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels.” This year’s HLPF, which ran from Monday, July 10 to Wednesday, July 19, 2023, marked a pivotal moment for the mid-term review of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and laid the foundation for the 2023 SDG Summit, scheduled for September.
Salwa Kader, the President of the International Federation for Peace and Sustainable Development (IFPSD), was an active participant in the discussions and events throughout the forum underscoring IFPSD’s commitment to these global priorities. The HLPF’s 10-day program was packed with discussions, presentations, and sessions aimed at assessing the world’s progress in achieving the SDGs. The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges to sustainable development, making the theme of “accelerating recovery” all the more pressing.
The mid-term review of the SDGs’ implementation, conducted at the HLPF, allowed stakeholders to take stock of progress and identify areas where more effort is needed. Kader’s presence at the HLPF and her active engagement in various discussions showcased her dedication to advancing these goals. Kader, in her role as President of IFPSD, emphasized the importance of collective action to overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic and ensure that the SDGs remain on track. Moreover, the groundwork laid at the HLPF in July will pave the way for the 2023 SDG Summit scheduled for September.
